nvnet doesnt work after update/patch ...

hi,

first of all my system:
- MSI K7N2-Delta ILSR
- AMD Athlon XP 2500+
- NVidia GForce 4 MX440
and me:

With some help of a friend i installed the following driver to get network connection:
NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0261.suse90.i586.rpm

After we got it work, i called the SUSE-Linux-Online-Update
and installed all patches that were possible.
There has been a patch for NVIDIA, a Kernel-Patch for AMD-CPUs
and some other patches. So after this patches and reboot i am
not more possible to connect to internet.

I am newbee on Linux!

if i type "ifconfig" on shell i get this:

lo Protokoll:Lokale Schleife
inet Adresse:127.0.0.1 Maske:255.0.0.0
inet6 Adresse: ::1/128 Gültigkeitsbereich:Maschine
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1

TX packets:60 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
Kollisionen:0 Sendewarteschlangenlänge:0
RX bytes:3912 (3.8 Kb) TX bytes:3912 (3.8 Kb)

if i'm looking on the details of networkadapter in SUSEplugger
i see that the name of the adapter is correct.
status is: availability = yes
configured = no
driver info:

Driver Info #0:
Driver Status: nvnet is not active
Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe nvnet"

if i type "modprobe nvnet" into a shell i get this:

Using /lib/modules/2.4.21-override-athlon/kernel/drivers/net/nvnet.o
/lib/modules/2.4.21-override-athlon/kernel/drivers/net/nvnet.o: unresolved symbol __netdev_watchdog_up_Ra7000325

The gpl driver might work. That's a good tip, thanks LBJM, i can try that on my nforce system. Otherwise. The suse -144 kernel update completely breaks nForce motherboards. Driver will not install, clean install or re-install.

you have to patch the kernel source with the driver. there's two patches 2.4 and 2.6. download the kernel from www.kernel.org and patch it and compile the kernel. find a kernel compile guide if you need help with that. by the way there's a nforce motherboard site that has a linux section too. www.nforcershq.com

Oh... a kernel, patch.. driver..

Well yuck. Not going to use that when I can download and install the other driver in 5 seconds with no compiling needed. Guess I'm stuck without the updated kernel.

after the nvidia nvnet driver is patched you still have to compile it against the kernel anyways. the gpl driver can be built into the kernel and will not taint it. people that dont like compiling things under linux especially the kernel are missing out. a cusom kernel is a lot faster then one that has a lot of extra things in it that the system will never use.

I know this problem has been posted before but since it has not been offered a valid solution to it (at least not in all cases) therefore I`m re-posting it for a particular case : Mainboard EPOX 8RDA+.

The problem appears on Red Hat 9.0 (haven`t tried SUSE 8.1 yet) and it regards no autodetection on

Nvidia Nforce2 MCP-T (OnBoard)

and therefore disabling all its services which of course includes Internet connection.

I of course tried installing the RedHat 9.0 drivers provided by nVIDIA on :

http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_nforce_1.0-0261

(both versions , updated and non-updated) and some improvement was made , it detected it as eth0 (default I suppose) but it can not enable it , I suppose since it shows its status as "Inactive".

Given all this I tried reading various forums on which these kind of problems were discussed but none of them offered a universal WORKING solution most of them pointing out downloading the drivers written above which of course do not prove to be successful for all of us.

However a different thread on this forum seemed to have displayed an alternative for ABIT (I hope I`m not mistaking here but I`m too lazy to check ) Mainboards and I was wondering if there is someone out there who had it figured out for EPOX.

It may sounds ridiculous but since I`m a Linux newbie/retard (but eager to learn ) : does that "Inactive" thing mean the card is not functional or is it about IP/DNS/GATEWAY misconfiguration (which of course is different from the card not working at all).

Hoping I didn`t irritate you by re-posting this problem and thanking you in advance for your help ,

Desorien.

you problem sounds like the mac address problem the fix is from the site I posted above:
Known problems:
* Some boards give bogus MAC addresses and work only partially.
Same problem happens with nvnet on these boards.
Workaround:
ifconfig eth0 hw ether 00:02:03:04:05:06
after modprobe, before ifup.
Maybe a BIOS upgrade will help, too.

Ok , let me get this straight :

"ifconfig eth0 hw ether 00:02:03:04:05:06" is a console command where "00:02:03:04:05:06" is my physical adress (MAC) and modprobe and ifup are commands which are to be run after/before ifconfig ?

Please do help...

Oh and one more question regarding the drivers I should download/install.
Given the fact that I just re-installed RH 9.0 which one of the drivers displayed on nVIDIA site should I download ? Here`s the site ...

http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_nforce_1.0-0261

The Kernel Upgrade one or the other ? Last time I installed them both (Non-UP and then UP Version) and obtained the same results and no errors whatsoever...

Thank you.

sounds to me that the module you are loading might not be for your kernel.

at the console type in "lsmod" and see if the nvnet driver is loaded if not type in "modprobe nvnet" and it should give you errors.

btw heres the nforcers linux forum http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=29

and here another nvidia linux forum
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/foru...?s=&forumid=27
