NVIDIA Quadro NVS440 won't start X after RHEL update

This is my response to my own self :-)
After running the installer with --kernel-name=`uname -r`, it occurred to me to run startx and not X. Now it works fine, four screens, proper resolution. <sigh>

So now I and you know.

Here's the thing: When I run X, I get the "X" on my screens - four screens, from left to right. I can move it with my mouse. I don't get it to fully load an X window. There are no errors in my /var/log/Xorg.0.log. I am using NVIDIA driver 8762, have reinstalled it a few times, removed DRI from xorg.conf. Still, only get an "X" on my screens.
Here is my xorg.conf:

# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder26) Mon May 15 14:17:32 PDT 2006

# Xorg configuration created by system-config-display

# To disable the XKEYBOARD extension, uncomment XkbDisable.
# Option "XkbDisable"
# To customise the XKB settings to suit your keyboard, modify the

# keyboard, you will probably want to use:
# Option "XkbModel" "pc102"
# If you have a US Microsoft Natural keyboard, you can use:
# Option "XkbModel" "microsoft"
#
# Then to change the language, change the Layout setting.
# For example, a german layout can be obtained with:
# Option "XkbLayout" "de"
# or:
# Option "XkbLayout" "de"
# Option "XkbVariant" "nodeadkeys"
#
# If you'd like to switch the positions of your capslock and
# control keys, use:
# Option "XkbOptions" "ctrl:swapcaps"
# Or if you just want both to be control, use:
# Option "XkbOptions" "ctrl:nocaps"
