Question NVIDIA nForce driver installation problem on RedHat 8.0

Has anyone had any success compiling the source tarball for the nforce chipset?

I am getting the following errors when I try and compile the tarball:

warning: user buildmeister does not exist - using root
warning: user buildmeister does not exist - using root
warning: user buildmeister does not exist - using root
warning: user buildmeister does not exist - using root

I get this error a couple of times during the compile, then it fails at the end with:

Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.5818

Looking farther up in the output, I find the following lines:

Executing(%build): /bin/sh -e /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.5818
+ umask 022
+ cd /usr/src/redhat/BUILD
+ cd nforce
+ LANG=C
+ export LANG
+ -n nforce
/var/tmp/rpm-tmp.5818: line 23: -n: command not found

Has anyone else had trouble installing the sources for the nForce chipset under RedHat 8.0?

Thanks,

reinstall the kernel source.

I had that problem with the kernel source from the disks and when I downloaded it via apt then I could compile nvidia's source for video drivers.

is you nforce board running redhat 8.0?

Did you reinstall the kernel source? Did this fix your problem?

I can't get x-windows running on a #$%@ing k7n420 board.

I don't have any trouble with x-windows, but nvidia is releasing a new driver for 8.0. The current driver was created with gcc 2.x, but the kernel for 8.0 is compiled with gcc v3.x. As a result, it will never compile because the two .o files are not compatible with gcc 3.x.

I can hang tight until the new driver comes out, which should be soon.

well if anyone could tell me how to compile the driver manually from the source and wheather that works or not, because until I can get that driver working under RH8.0 I'm moving back to 7.3 which is a shame because I've been hearing some really good things about RH8.0.

btw I don't understand make files and as far as I can tell even when compiling the source on the system using the makefile the system still comes up and states that the driver has been compiled with version 2 instead of version 3.

There are two files that are in the source that do not compile under gcc 3. I am by no means a gcc expert, but the files have the extension .o, and they are precompiled beforehand. As far as I know, there is no source for either one of these, and we have to wait for nVidia to release new versions so that the source can be compiled under gcc 3.x.
