Rep:
nvidia gtx 960 random blackout
I've got gtx960 card that has worked nicely for a year or two. but after upgrading to debian 9, and having some problems with drivers, screen goes blank randomly for few seconds. the ambient temperature has been lot higher these days, but the GPU is about max 40C only.
it seems to be some kind of hw failure, as the bios screen has same symptoms. there are no log entries.
what to do?
thanks.

OK,
Code:
$ lspci -vv | grep -i -A 10 vga
will tell you which video driver is in use. Is the blackout random?

This can be found out by reading xorg.log.
It is the nvidia driver.

I've just connected second LCD with DVI on second port (extended) and the screen doesn't go blank on that one. so, perhaps its the monitor.
edit:
yep, its definitely the monitor (HP LP2065). others have same problem:
https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Deskto...d/td-p/3663422
I noticed that buttons on monitor (menu, +, -, ..) cause it to go blank. and it goes very bright.
to be fair, I've used it for many years. perhaps its the caps.

There is a much better way to do the lspci command.
Code:
lspci -vv -s $(lspci | awk '/VGA/{print $1}')
This nested command will output data only for the video card.
If you have more than one video card the following loop will work.
Code:
for SLOT in $(lspci | awk '/VGA/{print $1}'); do lspci -vv -s $SLOT; done
A simpler format for multiple video cards with no loop.
Code:
lspci | awk '/VGA/{print $1}' | xargs -n 1 lspci -vv -s
When I try the command given by AwesomeMachine
"lspci -vv | grep -i -A 10 vga" I get loads of irrelevant output as it matches every instance of VGA. For example it matches VGASnoop everywhere. The full listing is over 100 lines as it matches over 20 devices when it only needs to match one, the video card. The nested command given above gives output only for the video card.
For example it matches all four USB Controllers and about 15 other irrelevant devices.
Code:
...
00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #1 (rev 05) (prog-if 20 [EHCI])
Subsystem: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd Device 5006
