nVidia Geoforce fx 5200 problems

I'm running Ubuntu 7.04 (feisty fawn) and trying to get my nvidia card working properly. I've installed the drivers and when starting gdm I see the nvidia logo but none of the advanced graphics stuff works such as open gl or 3d acceleration.

Glxinfo returns:
Code:
name of display: :0.0
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual

Anyone have any ideas?

What modules are showed when :

Code:
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
This part is the most relevant:

Code:
Section "Module"
    Load "dbe"
    Load "extmod"
    Load "type1"
    Load "freetype"
    Load "glx"
EndSection

In your /etc/X11/xorg.conf look for the following part:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
BoardName "GeForce 7950 GT"
EndSection

the bold part is important, this should say nvidia if you installed the nvidia driver, perhaps it's still on vesa or nv, change it if it's anything else the nvidia.

please NOTE: backup your xorg.conf so that you can allways switch back!!!
AS NOTED:

cp xorg.conf xorg.conf.backup

Now when things go wrong you can allways do CTRL+ALT+F1 and copy the backup back!

Yeah, I've set the driver to nVidia, meaning it looks like this:

Quote:
Section "Device"
Identifier "NVIDIA Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200]"
Driver "nvidia"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
Option "RenderAccel" "true"
EndSection

What does :

Code:
glxinfo | grep direct

&

glxinfo | grep openGL
tell you?

And what's the output of:

Code:
/var/log/xorg.log
or sometimes named:
Code:
/var/log/xorg.0.log

glxinfo | grep direct gives me
Quote:
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
and then the above line repeated about 100 times
glxinfo | grep openGL gives me the exact same thing

My Xorg.0.log is too long to post...

if i'm not mistaking it's based on date, just look for the date of today, and post that bit.

Only one thing to add on a brief look at your stuff ... get rid of dri in xorg.conf

You might also get the latest Nvidia driver and let it config your xorg.conf file.
