Nvidia geForce4 MX 440 Crashes RH 8.0

This weekend I replaced my video card with an Nvidia geForce4 MX 440 based card. I downloaded and installed the driver without any trouble (using the install utility) and changed the driver to "nvidia" XF86Config. Unfortunatly, "startx" hangs the system hard.

This is a Redhat 8.0 box with the last RH patches, but no other updates and no unusual hardware.

It's currently fine with the nvidia driver uninstalled and the card setup with a plain 'vesa' driver (which is a bit disappointing).

I spent quite a bit of time on this. I've been over and over the docs. Other people seem to have had no trouble with this card so I'm a bit puzzled. There's nothing exotic about my kernel, the module loaded fine and all the nvidia files were installed correctly, as far as the readme describes. Suggestions anyone?

Thanks
