i don't think you'll get a precise answer to this (other than just trying).

fwiw, i'm using an older nvidia graphics card myself.
it runs fine with the nouveau driver and installing the legacy proprietary driver is not too hard.

here's mine:
Code:

lspci|grep -i vga
00:0d.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation C61 [GeForce 6150SE nForce 430] (rev a2)

i am not using any *buntu.
from what i see on forums, ubuntu doesn't pay much attention to older hardware anymore - you might want to try a different xfce distro.

@ivtec : Fx5500 should be OK.

The package 'nvidia-173' etc. will be installed automatically at OS install,
when the option "restricted drivers" is ticked.

according to this, vectorlinux is the only distro specialising on old computers and xfce.
you might want to try either:
other DE's
or:
install a barebones distro + a few packages you like. doesn't have to be the complete DE.

hint: take a look at the distros showing in my sidebar.

Thanks ondoho; today i installed debian wheezy7 and it's samething; i get svideo color at some point when booting then goes away staying black in white,
you talk about vectorlinux with Xfce, but my xubuntu14.04 has XFCE so what makes you think that the Svideo color will work on that Distro?

John VV 09-14-2014 05:12 PM

for cards using the UNSUPPORTED 173 or 96 nvidia driver
you can use the .run BUT!!!!!!!
and it is a big "but"
BUT you have to use a OLD version of Xorg
xorg 1.12 or 1.11

depending on the OS this might NOT be possible

RHEL 5.10 uses xorg 1.11
RHEL 6.5 uses 1.13
---BUT---
you can force a downgrade to xorg 1.12 from RHEL 6.3

you started your thread as a general "best distro" query, now you have a real problem?

that's something different. are you going to give us some real info then?

btw, i don't "talk about vectorlinux with Xfce" - it simply was the only search result for old computers AND xfce.

oh for god's sake, just mosey over to distrowatch and check it out yourself and try something already.
