Nvidia GeForce Fx5500 256MB
Hi guys: anybody knows if this video card , Nvidia GeForce Fx5500 256MB
works in xubuntu 14.04 in a Dell Demention 4500 P4 |
i don't think you'll get a precise answer to this (other than just trying).
fwiw, i'm using an older nvidia graphics card myself. it runs fine with the nouveau driver and installing the legacy proprietary driver is not too hard. here's mine: Code:
lspci|grep -i vga from what i see on forums, ubuntu doesn't pay much attention to older hardware anymore - you might want to try a different xfce distro. |
@ivtec : Fx5500 should be OK.
The package 'nvidia-173' etc. will be installed automatically at OS install, when the option "restricted drivers" is ticked. ( http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/nvidia-173 ) |

you might want to try either: other DE's or: install a barebones distro + a few packages you like. doesn't have to be the complete DE. hint: take a look at the distros showing in my sidebar. |

you talk about vectorlinux with Xfce, but my xubuntu14.04 has XFCE so what makes you think that the Svideo color will work on that Distro? |
for cards using the UNSUPPORTED 173 or 96 nvidia driver
you can use the .run BUT!!!!!!! and it is a big "but" BUT you have to use a OLD version of Xorg xorg 1.12 or 1.11 depending on the OS this might NOT be possible RHEL 5.10 uses xorg 1.11 RHEL 6.5 uses 1.13 ---BUT--- you can force a downgrade to xorg 1.12 from RHEL 6.3 |

that's something different. are you going to give us some real info then? btw, i don't "talk about vectorlinux with Xfce" - it simply was the only search result for old computers AND xfce. oh for god's sake, just mosey over to distrowatch and check it out yourself and try something already. |
