nvidia geforce fx 5600 ultra and redhat 9
 

Hi all,

I was wondering if perhaps someone might be able to offer me a little advice on getting this card running?

I have had a stable machine for a few months now running rh9. Yesterday my old vid card died (sniff.. loved that geforce2pro) and i decided to buy an interim one until i build a new machine for doom. so i picked up a pny geforce fx 5600 ultra. i knew from my geforce2 that nvidia has been really good about delivering drivers for their cards in linux, so i was hoping for a relatively painless installation.

So, removed old geforce 2 from system. insert new 5600 ultra. boot up. kudzu autodetects that i pulled the old geforce2 out. asks me what i want to do (remove configuration). continue, but for some reason it didnt autodetect the new vid card. okay. so i keep on truckin and get to the login screen with no problems.

I login and change to runlevel 3. cd to where i dl'd the new nvidia drivers and ran
sh NVIDIA-Linux..#######.run
drivers get installed with no problem. the new drivers found the old ones and uninstalled them for me.

Except that now when i start the system. if i try to use X i will invariably lock up in a few minutes. so i did a quick check of my XF86 log.

The entry for my old geforce2 is still in my XFree86 config file. And there is no mention of the new card.

So, is there a way to get my distro to autodetect the card and configure for it, or should i do it by hand?

If i do it by hand, do i need to do any more than correcting my xfree86 config file?
