Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Nvidia Failure with Mandrake 10.1

I'm running Mandrake 10.1 and have a Nvidia graphic card. The installation goes smoothly except that the installtion warns me that the kernel has been precompiled wih the rivafb drivers. I log in and KDE starts perfectly with the nvidia drivers.

Now to the actuall problem. When I kill KDE (CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE) or "Log Out" whatever you prefer to return to console it's not readable, the screen is like zoomed in and the text is totally wierd. Did'nt have any problem in Slackware 10.

Anybody know how to fix this?

The problem is that the nvidia driver "don't like" the framebuffer modus of the tty's (If you have fancy graphics during boot you most probably have this...), I think. The easiest way to fix this is to edit the lilo.conf (or grub-configuration-file) and remove the parameter to the kernel saying "vga=<something>" (where <something> can be 791 or something). Then if you run the lilo bootloader run 'lilo'. Reboot. This should do the trick... Otherwise you can use the mandrake control center and edit your boot-parameters in a similar way.

I can't get the nVidia drivers to install because of this "rivafb" warning. What is it and how can I get round it?

Thanks in advance

Steve
