nvidia conflicting with new kernel 2.6.30.1

1.)I recently upgraded to 2.6.30.1 from 2.6.27 nd m using ubuntu 8.10.

I have nvidia GO 7400 on my hp dv6000.
I had the drivers installed and until i did the upgrade all was fine.

As soon as i upgraded and booted in the new kernel, the display went awry..the resolution dropped to 800x640 and xrandr -s didnt work..
I changed the menu.lst to log into the recovery mode and then i fixed the xserver....

Now as the xserver was fixed, the nvidia drivers have stopped working in the 2.6.27 also....
M not able to figure out why ??? So not able to fix it, even tried reinstalling the driver, but no luck.
Pls help

2.) At my workplace m using RHEL with kernel 2.6.18-92.el5.
I want to compile the isicom.c driver so compiled the 2.6.18 source...
Everything is fine, but again Xserver is causing problems and the display doesnt work. It just opens the command line.
I studied the xorg.log and found that problem was with 'agpgart'.
The error was GARTinit:could not find agpgart...
I solved all the other conflicts slowly, but this one is quite challenging and persistent !!!!

please help me out !!!

nvidia drivers are specific to each kernel. Upgrade your kernel means you need to update your nvidia driver.

Did you patch the 2.6.18 kernel to patch level 92 before recompiling kernel?

I tried to re install the nvidia drivers again, but it says that nvidia-glx-173 is already the latest version.

And also why the driver stopped working in the old kernel ???
