Question nVidia card resolution stuck at 800*600 --ARGGHHH!

I have tried Ubuntu, Mint, and even Crunchbang.

On all the *buntu clones I have the same problem with my nVidia 6100 card - no resolution higher than 800*600.

What am I doing wrong here ???I have seen a number of similar posts and cannot for the life of me find the simple answer that fixes this.

Thanks in advance if anyone has a quick fix - I just want to surf web pages and run youtube and misc office apps. For teh life of me cannot understand why does it not just run outa the box?

caio!

On SuSE, I've had problems in the past with video sizing problems which was fixed after installing the propriety nvidia driver and running SaX2. The most recent Xorg server can calculate settings on its own without an xorg.conf file. However if your monitor does't communicate it's capabilities properly, you may need to create an xorg.conf file.

If you are using the nvidia driver, you could run the "nvidia-settings" program to generate one. Then run the nvidia-xconfig program to fine tune it.

Could be your monitor. Have you a HorizSync of VertRefresh line in xorg.conf?
Could be you are running on a vesa driver. Check both of those.
