nvidia and 2.6.9. kernel
Hi, everyone. I'm a linux newbie, so be gentle.
I've been runing Debian sarge on 2.6.8 for a while and needed to recompile my kernel, so I went with 2.6.9. After rebooting, my nvidia driver didn't work anymore. I reinstalled the driver (it's still the latest from nvidia), which required it build a new driver for the kernel. Now X seems to start - except it only shows the nvidia logo. If I type in my username/pass, I can tell that it logs in and I can see the mouse ponter, but it still only shows the logo. Using CygwinX on XP, everything works fine. Nothing has changed from my config that worked for 2.6.8, and I can't find any problems in the XFree86 log. I suspect that Nvidia needs to release a new driver for the new kernel. I'm probably going going to back out to 2.6.8. If anyone knows what other problem it might be, please let me know. Also, is there a way to file a kernel or nvidia driver bug with people who know this stuff better than me? Edit: Looks like some people on Mandrake are having the same problem. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/history/253785 http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=255156 Sorry about the repost.. |
I've got no problem at all with the 2.6.9 kernel.. I'm running Arch linux 0.7 with Xorg 11R6.8.1-1 and nvidia driver 1.0.6629-1. It also worked good with the 6611 driver (with patch) from nvidia.

my estimation It's Nvidia's problem
I got the same sort of error on Slack10 with a newly compiled 2.4.27 kernel...
I really think the problem is with that latest Nvidia build. I did nothing more than install an older Nvidia driver build (something 4xxx) I had laying around and it's fine. It would n't hurt I suppose to fire off a n email to a contact_us address on the nvdi site... (or maybe some of theire deveopers regularly read LQ.org :) Regards, John |
Thanks for all the help. I've found a few other threads out there for this, and it looks like it is a driver problem.
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=40143 No word whether nvidia even knows about this yet. |
you could try:
option "nologo" 1 in the device section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf |
I tried that, and just ended up with a useless blank screen instead of a useless nvidia logo. Maybe I'll try:
option "StartWorkingAgain!" 1 |
try older drivers from www.minion.de
|
use an older kernel, only the new driver works with 2.6.9, try 2.6.8.1
