Nvidia 6600gt AGP Poor 2D performance.

I just upgraded from a Geforce 3 to a Geforce FX6600GT (AGP version).

Since going this, my 2D performance is much slower than the Geforce 3. I mainly notice this in KDE programs that use XFT font rendering. Konqueror and konsole being the worst. Interestingly enough GTK-Based programs using XFT font rendering work fast just like on the Geforce 3.

I am using the NVIDIA binary drivers on XOrg 6.8.2, and DO have RENDER ACCELERATION turned on.

Has anyone else seem this sort of behavior with this card? Why just KDE apps?

It's very frustrating! I would try the nv drivers, but they don't support this card yet.

How did you install the Nvidia Drivers??? Did you use a package for your distro??? (probably not if you are running Linux From Scratch). Open nvidia-settings and tell me which driver version you have installed.

I just used the Nvidia installer. I'm running the latest, 7667. I noticed the same thing on the previous driver version.

Are you able to try the 7174 driver. I got worse performance with the 7664 driver and my games wouldn't launch with the 7667 driver. Maybe that would help?

Thanks for the suggestion, but I did try several driver version including 7174 (I went all the way back to the first version that suported this card).

I almost think it may be a QT/KDE problem because non-KDE stuff performs like the geforce 3 did on XFT font stuff.

Plus 3D performance is awesome.

I'm starting to warm up to xfce4 anyway, though I do love KDE, this performance problem is driving me to alternatives.

I did enter a KDE bug report since only KDE is affected, so maybe one of the KDE developers will have some ideas. I also posted on the official nvidia linux forum at nvnews, and at least 3 others experience this with the same card.
