Hi, Im running Ubuntu Breezy 2.6.12 kernel, on an intel motherboard with a PentiumD 820. As the title says i have an nvidia 6600 installed with 3d working, but i keep reading about cards that are supposed to be "slower" than this getting a higher fps in glxgears, now i know that its not a benchmark but im just curious. i get about 4200, is this normal? I play doom3 at 1024x768 and its very smooth so i have to assume there is no big problem here, xorg is configured correctly and such. any help would be appreciated, Thank You. oh and i did search to see if i could find an answer but to no avail.

If you are getting 4200 FPS, you're fine. Many glxgears "scores" are very misleading because depending on how big the window is, your score can vary dramatically. (Tiny windows report huge scores, while full screen windows report much more modest scores). I have an nVidia 6600, and these are my scores:

Small window (approx 3" by 3") ~ 5600 FPS
Full screen ~ 570 FPS

The 6600 is a quality card, and based on your description, it sounds to me like everything is set up perfectly on your system. Furthermore, if you're happy with the performance and the system response is smooth, then you're golden. BTW, Welcome to LQ!

Thank you J.W. i tried some resizing of the window and the fps does vary very dramaticly from about 700 or so full screen to about 7000 3x3, the default window which was a little bigger is what was giving me the 4200. I am extremely happy with my linux setup at the moment, The only thing i have to gripe about is no matter what i do, when i try to install M$ Flight Simulator 2004 it always thinks there is about 2 gigs of disk space availible when there is actually 70 gigs, any other game i install with cedega reports fine. Any ideas? Thanks.

depending on a LOT of things the FPS can drastically change. in the following code of my glxgears, the first set were with the standard 3x3 window. the big jump (up to 10k) were when i minimized the gears box, then it slows down again after i bring that window back up.

the bolded FPS are from the minimized window.

if you are getting 4200 FPS and your games are smooth and the system is not chunking along that sounds to me like the card is running smooth and doing its job very well.

In order to run MS programs under Linux, your best bet is to use Wine, which more or less permits you to install and run Windows programs under Linux. I'm not too familiar with Ubuntu but an excellent Wine resource is frankscorner which contains a bunch of info on how to get Wine up and running on your rig if it's not already contained within your distro. Similarly, there are numerous existing posts here about LQ regarding Wine; I'm confident that they can help point you in the right direction.
