NVidia 6106 drivers
 

I was wondering if anyone was having a problem with the latest nvdia drivers?

I have downloaded them and installed them under Fedora Core 2, Mandrake 10 CE and Slackware 10 and each time I have done it I have had them crash my X server after rebooting 3-4 times. It is wierd I know they are installed correctly because I am able to play UT2004 without any problems and I get their stupid little splash screen. I have also updated the kernel in Fedora to the 2.6.6 using the RH network to see if that would make a difference and it hasn't. I upgraded the kernel manually in Mandrake 10 CE and Slackware 10 to the 2.6.7 and have had the same problem. It tells me it is unable to find the screen or something like that. I don't have the exact error because I am at work and also because I finally got tired of messing with it so I just loaded XP Pro on my shuttle to make it usable for the time being.

noobtesting - per the LQ Rules please do not bump your own posts until at least 24 hours have elapsed without getting a reply. Your post is getting visibility, you just need to give LQ'ers a chance to respond.

As for your issue, it would be extremely helpful if you could post the exact error message(s) that you are seeing. If the error is that a "screen cannot be found" then that would suggest a possible misconfiguration in your XF86Config file (or xorg.conf in Slack 10) but that's just a guess. The more detail you can provide, the more detailed suggestions/answers others can provide. -- J.W.

i've also been having small problems, but i'm only new to nvidia on linux. in particular, i have often gotten the "no screens found" errors.

i got around them eventually though, but i couldn't tell you exactly how. if you posted your "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" file, or your "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" file, it may be more help to see what the problem is.

it's possibly just the configuration of the screens you are using, but it may also be something wrong with the hardware (if the same problems are on three distros)..... is this all on the same machine?

one quick fix though regarding:

if you go to the Graphics device section on /etc/X11/xorg.conf (i'm using slackware, not the other distros), you can add the line:

Option "NoLogo" "1"

to not have the splash screen on startup..... although i don't know how serious you were being about the screen being a problem.

i probably wasn't much help, but i could have more to add if i saw your xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log files from the slackware install. i understand the need to format and use something you know works though.....

i'm only new to this myself, as i mentioned, but it seems that there is always something small which can fix something large.
