Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

NTFS writing questions

Ok I got this question, I'm using Mandrake 10.1 and KDE and I want to be able to write to my NTFS partitions. The NTFS partitons are mounted but I can only read them. However KDE came with Samba which allows me to write to NTFS partitions on my network. With all this in mind, can I write to the NTFS parttions on my computer and if yes how would I go about doing this.

NTFS write support is not yet complete and at present you can only overwrite a file's data (no change file size, create/delete file/dir, etc.). You will probably need to mount -o rw to force read-write and may need to reconfigure the kernel as well (I'm not sure off the top of my head whether mandrake kernels come with read-only or read-write NTFS driver). With SAMBA it is the remote windows machine which is manipulating the on-disk data structures and the smbfs just needs to speak the protocol correctly.

By default, ntfs partitions are setup as read-only, as write support is still classed as experimental.
There is another way however, using captiventfs, which uses the actual win drivers on your system to perform the i/o.
see:

I do not write to ntfs so can't vouch for either approach.
