NST530S2 SATA Enclosure + SATA DVDRW - cannot write to media

I purchased a NexStar External SATA enclosure (NST530S2) and installed into it the DVD-RW drive that was in my Linux system. The connection to the computer is via USB. That same system can read the DVDs I put into the enclosed drive - not always well - but it will not write to a DVD. (The drive works fine when installed back into the system.)

Yet the drive and the enclosure work well under Windows 7 and XP. The enclosure specs do not state that it works with Linux, and the manufacturer's website says nothing about Linux.

Googling for a Linux driver didn't produce anything that seems useful.

What might be a solution?
