Unhappy Non-winmodem initialization failure

I'm running on Mandrakelinux 9.1, standard kernel (2.4.21-13mdk).

I have an Acorp 56k Serial port (IC+ chipset) modem. For some reasons, when i try to connect to the ineternet with kppp, it gives me those weird strings, little rectangles, while iniatializing the modem and it stays in the phase of 'initializing modem'.

I did a query on the modem:
ATI: (rectangular strings) ATI TP560 Data/Fax/Voice 56K Modem OK
ATI1: ATI1 External Controller Ver3.00, CheckSum=B394 OK
ATI2: ATI2 TEST OK! OK
ATI3: ATI3 TP560ATI3 TP560 Data/Fax/Voice 56K Modem OK
ATI4: ATI4 DSP Ver3.00 CheckSum=7643 OK
ATI5: ATI5 CTR21 Complex Impedence OK
ATI6: ATI6 0 OK
ATI7: ATI7 Controller Ver3.00 Dateec 05 18:02 2001 OK

I forgot to mention that i have a second modem, a conexant winmodem with its drivers installed.

Moreover, I tried to download the newest kernel (2.4.23) and compiling it, but, still, the modem wouldnt initialize.

Please help me,

Thanks in advance,
