Unhappy non Plug and Play monitor

i've got this old packer bell monitor that says it can goto 1200 by 1000 (not that but ya know the res i'm talking about) only prob is that the monitor i'm guessing is not plug and play and i have no idea wat refresh rates to do cuzz i can in some live cds get 800 by 600 and others it will only work at the 640. i think it has somthing to do with the refresh rate but i've never herd of refresh rates below 60 or know how to properly match virt refresh. so if any of you guys know how i can overcome these probs (i'm really looking to get 800x600 in moviX cuzz it won't let me watch DVDs at 640) it would be a big help to me.

thanks agian!
