My 3G connection works perfect, but my wired connection doesn't work at all. It seems like I'm not the only one having this problem and I reported it on Lauchpad last week, but received no reply. Does anyone know about a way around this?
When you say it's not working at all, what exactly isn't working?
i.e. Is it not obtaining an IP address (assuming it's set to use DHCP)?
Is it obtaining an IP address but no traffic is being sent/received through the interface?
Does it work when you don't use your 3G connection and stop working when you start using it?
Please be more specific with exactly what isn't working, could you also provide us with a link to the launchpad bug you reported so we don't have to waste time trying to track it down please?

Thanks very much.
Hi Micky,
When I plug in the network cable it detects the network and obtain the IP I take it as it tells me I'm connected, but when opening a webpage, or pinging google.com, it doesn't connect and says, google.com is an unknown host. It doesn't connect to anything. It does this with my 3G connection on and off.

Have you tried pinging with IP? For example www.google.com equals to
ping 209.85.135.147
If you get reply you have a problem with DNS setting. I had similar issues using my laptop with wireless somewhere in some hotel and then plugging ethernet cable at home...
Also you should be able to ping your own machine with internal IP or localhost and router too, otherwise something is fishy with the network adapter...
You know you should really post what kind of hardware you have.. I'd say it's impossible to troubleshoot your problem based on what you provided to launchpad. you didn't post the output of lspci, you didn't scan your dmesg log to see what interfaces have been identified. cat /var/log/dmesg | grep -i eth You didn't verify the detected ethernet interface has been configured in /etc/network/interfaces
How about providing some of that information so people could actually help you ?
Thanks. It is working now, but now I have other problems.
My network manager applet that was in the system tray, where I just click to connect to my 3G network has disappeared and when I shut my computer off it stops at "Shutting down ALSA". It never use to do this.
So I changed my network interfaces back to what it was and then rebooted. (Reset actually as I couldn't reboot with the shutdown stopping on ALSA). When I restarted the connection icon was back and when shutting down everything shut down perfectly. I have no idea how the network configuration can cause ALSA to freeze.
So I edit network interface back to what you told me to, and had the same problem, but could connect. Changed it back to the original configuration and then everything else except the wired connection was working again. So it must be related to the auto eth0 part. I find this strange.
That is very bizarre.. there should be no interaction between those pieces..
Hmm..
try this instead..
Code:
allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
For some reason I'm thinking if you manually setup the network interface it disables network-manager.
Personally I've never liked network-manager it's never worked right for me. I have used an alternate graphical network management program that does work well called wicd. I use this on my netbook to manage my Wired and Wireless WPA2 connections.
I'll give that commands a shot. I actually like the network-manager and need it actually. Ubuntu 8.10's network-manager has 3G support. It has never been this easy to connect to 3G. When I first tried to get my internal 3G modem to work with 7.10 it took weeks! Lol! Now its about 5 clicks after a fresh install and I'm online. Its great!
I'll let you know if your commands work.
Thanks for the help.
Btw... This is way off the topic but as you're very active on here I figured you'll know. Is it possible to change my username?
Those lines were supposed to go in your /etc/network/interfaces file.
wicd is graphical just like network manager. I do not know what it's support for 3G is like. You would have to check their documentation.
No I don't think you can change your username, although Jeremy could possibly do it if you emailed him...
