Question No speaker socket output (not working)

I've installed Ubuntu 6.06 on my Acer Travelmate 270 Series laptop but the problem is even though the sound works through the inbuilt laptop speakers, I just cant get it to work through the 3.5mm speaker output!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It runs a SiS 961 Sound chip. Acer Travelmate 270 Series detailed specifications closest to mine (only I don't have the DVD drive only CD ) can be found at http://www.acersupport.com/notebook/...3xv_specs.html

Thanks

P.S.
I have also tryed it with Slackware 10.2, Fedora Core 5, SUSE 10, Ubuntu 4.10 & 5.04, and various other source based linux distros (Arch, Lunar, etc) to no avail.

just jumping the gun here but can it be possible that it is a hardware problem like say a loose wire ? since our sound card is working that rules out software problems realy as there aint any specific hardware required for the speaker output. try it in windoze if you have it handy.

well, that can mean a lot of things. it can mean that something happened after the installation. also,do you have digital volume controls for the laptop ? does it have a + and - button for the volume or is analoge like a dial ? if it is digital its possible that the drivers for it aint installed. i have a similiar problem with my old laptop where i couldnt change stuff like brightness and a few other things as they were digital controls.

if possible, boot up into windows in the laptop and see if the volume was set on mute or something. i canna provide any other sollution sorry.
