No sound w/ Magicmedia 256av card on ibm 390

hello again,
well been trying for about a week 2 get sound on ibm thinkpad 390 that i just installed mdk 9.1 I get no slide volume settings when i run kmix. the window is just blank. aumix starts w/an hourglass but never becomes a window and just closes. i have a bunch of output that a bunch of others in forums have asked for. perhaps someone here can help. the sound service shows as running in draksvcs but the alsa service is stopped and will not start. I've been told that i dont need the alsa service running. here's the output:

I have the same chipset on my laptop and I simply installed the ALSA sound system and it worked right off. Although i started to get a bunch of errors in my dmesg, it still wored fine. Read the instructions carefully, it took me many tries before I got it to work. Good luck :)

eroica 10-18-2003 01:59 PM

i checked under drakx services and it shows the alsa service is not working. when i hit the start button the service still does not start. is there a way to check and see if alsa is installed and if not how do u install alsa service? remember u are dealing w/someone coming from windows and all these modules and files are totally foreign 2 me. i'm used 2 dealing with the registry...

thanx
alan

eroica 10-18-2003 04:10 PM

I tried reinstalling alsa 2 no avail. i made copy of output of commands in troubleshooting guide in harddrak. perhaps someone can tell me if anything looks wrong. please remember i'm from windows world so please spell out recomendations for this is totally new 2 me. as u can see aumix cant be opened and several files and directories cant be found. could this be the problem???

thanx alan

Hmmmm, it seems that Mandrake is somewhat different from Slack....If you think alsa is already installer, tried running alsamixer. If that works make sure the master volume is turned up, it defaults to off after the service is restarted. If in doubt, like me most of the time, just turn them all on and up. Seems to work ;)

http://www.alsa-project.org/
Might help you out.
By the way...you have a hell of a lot of modules loaded....
Sorry I can't give you any more detailed help, but if you suspect alsa isnt installed, compile it from source. Although Mandrake might have it installed default....I dont know Mandrake.
