No sound over HDMI Video Card with GeForce 9500GT

I have installed a Asus EN9500GT rev 2.0 video card featuring Nividia 9500 chipset and HDMI output.

The problem I am having is getting sound over hdmi to my tv.

Here are some details:

root@mythServer:/etc# uname -r
2.6.27-9-generic

root@mythServer:/proc/asound# cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.17.

Linux is not recognizing the video card as a sound card- I don't know if that should be the case:

root@mythServer:/etc# aplay -l

I am not really sure where to start, I have googled this quite a bit. I don't even know if the video card should be recognized as a soundcard. Thanks in advance.

your really may run into troubles with that card nvidia has us only up to the 8000 series. for support

that's a bummer. I started out with a GIGABYTE MA78GM-S2HP mobo with integrated Radeon 3200. I had the same problems trying to get audio over HDMI. After hearing everyone in the Linux community warn not to mess with ATI and go for NIVIDIA I assumed my problem was ATI. Otherwise I would have never bought this card!!
I am not without audio though. My tv conveniently has audio inputs for HDMI and I am just running the sound out from the regular sound jack on the linux box. I guess it is possible that the TV is not set up to handle sound over HDMI, but I don't have another tv to test on. Now that I have some kind of audio, I'm not worried about it anymore. If anyone figures it out let me know!
