No Sound On Acer Laptop

Hi,
I have installed a new suse linux os (Linux 2.6.16.13-4smp i686) on my Acer Aspire 5100. The mixer can however not be found so there is no sound. the vendor for the sond product on the system is realtek.
I am a first time user of linux and have no idea as to how to proceed. i tried downloading some sound drivers on the net but do not even know how to install it. please help.

Sound is a bit of an issue on the Acer Aspire 5100, but it does work. While the wired Ethernet Interface is a Realtek the sound interface is(at least on my Aspire 5100-3949 laptop);

00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SB450 HDA Audio (rev 01)

Try running as root alsaconf and select the snd_hda_intel driver.

You may want to update/upgrade ALSA and the kernel at least first.

Hello,
Thank you very much for the help. I would however be grateful if you could help me with the steps to take. Linux is virtually not used in my part of the world here (Ghana, West Africa) and so though i believe the above suggestion will be helpful, i have no idea as to how to go about it.
Thank you very much.
Kad.

Sorry I do not use SUSE I have RHEL5 update 1 on my laptop. I would suggest that you re-ask the question in the SuSE forum here:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/susenovell-60/

I do know that you want to upgrade both the kernel and alsa to support the sound interface.

Hi.
I have a Acer 4520 laptop and early me also faced d same sound card problem. Aft d long try, i solved my sound problem.
You just install d latest alsa. This will solve you d entire problem.
Download d alsa driver from here, http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Main_Page
Ref this page for installation steps. I tried in Ubuntu Gutsy.
