Post No sound on 2.6 kernel

Hi Guys,
I've compiled kernel 2.6.2 on my Suse 8.2 and downloaded alsa
driver, lib and utils (1.02) compiled them without a problem (following instructions on ALSA site for my sound card AC'97), but I still can't here no sound. My mixer (Kmix )is muted every time I boot, but alsamixer isn't (except mono master).I change needed settings on those mixers but nothing happens. This is part of my /etc/modules.conf associated with sound :

# YaST2: sound system dependent part
#
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-slot-1 on
alias sound-service-1-0 on
alias sound-slot-2 on
alias sound-service-2-0 on
alias sound-slot-3 on
alias sound-service-3-0 on
options snd snd_cards_limit=1 snd_major=116
# Ssy1.wGwp93ydet3:VT8233 AC97 Audio Controller
alias snd-card-0 snd-via8233
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
alias char-major-14 soundcore

Earlier, my slots (all except No. 0) where off .I changed that to on but nothing happens.I read some things about changing /etc/rc.d/rc.modules file, but I don't have that file on my sistem.
Really don't know what to do, please write.

For kernel 2.6.1, I found I had to remove the line "options snd snd_cards_limit=1 snd_major=116" from my modules.conf.

However, what you say seems to imply that alsamixer runs ok without displaying an error message. And if that is so, the right modules must be getting loaded into the kernel, so the problem lies elsewhere. Did you unmute both master volume and pcm volume, using alsamixer? Try turning the volume controls up higher.

First of all, sorry for answering thread so late after your reply.Your advice isn't news idea for me (sorry for bad English if it is).Mixer's don't make any change, trust me.I tried alsamixer, aumix and kmix .Same thing.I 've downloaded new driver (1.0.3.) and appropriate lib, utils and oss-lib for it (all 1.0.3 ) but nothing happens.Maybe this will give you some clue, driver worked fine on Mandrake 9.0 and 9.2, but on my current Suse 8.2 Pro I had to download driver from www.viaarena.com for my sistem to got my card working.Another thing I've noticed: when I install my sound driver, lib and utils without oss-lib, modprobe fails, but it goes OK when I include oss in installation.By the way, I also tried compiling kernel 2.6.3 and again nothing. Please give me some idea, even dumb one.I am not starting to feel desperate, I am already feeling like that for days. Thanks anyway....
