no sound in KDE 3.1 SLackware 9.1 KT600

I have what was a fully functioning Slack9.1 system, until I downloaded swaret and told it to --upgrade. It downloaded and installed all updates overnight and now sound no longer works. I get a message that /dev/dsp can't be found, though I found the link in my /dev directory. I've also got dsp0, dsp1 dsp2 and dsp3. My system looks like this:

Athlon XP 2700+
MSI KT6V-LSR KT600 board with onboard sound
512MB RAM
Radeon 9800Pro
other stuff that shouldn't matter.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm still a n00b so I don't knwo what commands to run to give you any hints. If you tell me, I"ll run it and post it here.

were you using alsa before the updates took place? if so, have you tried running alsconf, alsamixer, and alsactl store, since the updates? if not, what module were you using for sound, and is it loaded?

lsmod

from a terminal will show you what modules are loaded.

Here's what lsmod says:

Module Size Used by Tainted: P
soundcore 3332 0 (autoclean)
fglrx 172552 140
uhci 24496 0 (unused)
ehci-hcd 16872 0 (unused)
usbcore 58400 1 [uhci ehci-hcd]
pcmcia_core 40032 0
ide-scsi 9424 0
via-rhine 13552 1
mii 2304 0 [via-rhine]
crc32 2880 0 [via-rhine]
--------------

I'm assuming that "tainted" is talking about fglrx, so that didn't bother me.

I ran alsaconf and it did not detect my sound card, but alsaconf is only 0.9.0...that's not the latest, is it? I don't know what I was using for sound, but I'm guessing soundcore has something to do with it.

Thanks, njbrain.

What I did before you posted, though, is found out that everything in Linux has a how-to guide on the net. ALSA was among those things with said how-to, so I downloaded all the packages from alsa-project.org followed the how-to to just make/install/configure ALSA 1.0.4. Wish I'd known it could have been as easy as you solved it.
