No sound in Arch Linux, had same problem when upgrading to slack 10.1
Hi,
I did an FTP install of Arch Linux last night and selected every single package available (except of nss-spr or something, because it conflicted with firefox). I have to say, I am very pleased with my new system, save for one thing: the sound is non-existant.
I had this problem when I upgraded from slack 10.0 to slack 10.1 and I think it's something to do with the newer bersions of alsa, but I'm not sure. Basically, in the master channel in alsamixer, I can switch it on an off, but can't move it up and down, so it stays on 00.
I am using the onboard audio on an ASRock K7VT4A+ mobo, if that's any help. Also, using lsmod, I can see that the audio drivers are loaded, so I'm not really sure what the problem is.
I just tried it and it went through all the menus fine, found the right driver (via82xx) and seemed to finish up nicely, but I still have exactly the same problem when trying to play audio. Xmms gives me a window with the title "Couldn't opne audio" and the message:
Code:
Please check that:
Your soundcard is configured properly
You have the correct output plugin selected
No other program is blocking the soundcard
I've selected the ALSA output plugin in xmms and no other audio programs are running. Other programs like mpg123 seem to play mp3s fine, but just don't output any sound. This problem sems identical to the problem I had on Slack 10.1...Grrr...

yes, just select it and then hit the middle mouse button in the reply box here... if you only have a two-button mouse then hit both buttons at the same time...
