no sound from cd player, good sound from audio device test


i'm getting good sound when i run the audio devices test but when a cd starts playing on the cd player, there is no sound. i've tried volume increase on both the player and the speakers but still no sound. is there a switch or mute button or box that should be checked or unchecked? i have the built in sound card below

anyone have a suggestion or solution?


realizing how little i know about linux, ouch !

What CD player application are you using? If everything works except playing a CD its probably due to the fact that you do not have an audio cable between the drive and the sound card. The process playing data via the data bus cable is known as digital audio extraction (DAE).

Kcd needs an audio cable but the latest version of xmms does not. I do not know which other players like xine or mplayer are capable of DAE.

michaelk,
i'm using gnome cd player and the sound card is built into the motherboard. i will open the box and check on the cable if i find a connector on the motherboard diagram. will let you know after how it works.

is it nap time yet?

i did connect the audio cable from the cd to the motherboard pins, still no sound while the cd playsxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx correction

audio player is for "ogg orbis and other audio files"
cd player works great on cd's, flashing blue lights and good driving awards here i come.
thanks for the help, life is short but good... with sounds

ps i can't remember where i left my depends

hmm... can you try it with xmms?

ps: i can tell youre using the oss module. oss is getting outdated. try alsa:

Where can one get xmms?
