no sound card detected (dell integrated audio, RH9)
I have a dell dimension 8200 desktop with winXP and redhat 9 installed. Linux is working well except there is no sound. Whenever I run the soundcard detection thing, all it says is "no soundcard detected". I just have the standard SoundMax integrated digital audio that comes on most new dell's that do not get an upgraded soundcard.
How can i fix this? Will it not recognize my sound card because it is integrated? Should I just buy a new sound card, and if so what (cheap) sound card would be recommended.
Any help would be welcome, because I enjoy my music, and i find myself booting up windows most of the time because of this problem.
Good news/bad news
It looks like you can get you sound card to work./It is not supported out of the box from redhat 9. Here is a link that should start you no your way. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...03/10/1/100228
When i restarted the new hardware thing came up (when booting), and so i went through that which excited me, since I thought i was on the right track
No, when i run the soundcard detection program, it no longer says no soundcard found, but actually detects my soundcard. When I click play test sound it says the cmaudio driver could not be found.
are my settings in /etc/modules.conf correct? i just copied them out of the readme file that came with the driver i downloaded. can anyone explain this:
mark]# /sbin/modprobe cmaudio
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/sound/cmaudio.o: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/sound/cmaudio.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/sound/cmaudio.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/sound/cmaudio.o: insmod cmaudio failed
Sorry to keep bumping this to the top, but does anyone have any ideas? I have had this problem for several months now, and it is very frustrating. I have tried everything i can think of. This problem causes me to almost always boot windows instead.
No i have installed alsa driver, lib, and utils, and everything went fine(no errors). I unmuted the chanells, and changed the modules.conf file. Everything seemed to go ok, and I no longer get any "FAILED"'s while booting.
However, when I run the soundcard detection wizard it has not changed. it says:
Model: 8201EB AC'97 controller
Module: cmaudio
and it always says the cmaudio controller could not be loaded. should it not be different now that I installed the alsa-driver? how do i remove this old driver, and make it work with the alsa drivers?
