no sound, but sound card detected ok

Hey everybody,

Did a switch from mandrake 9 to red hat (kernel 2.4.18-14) yesterday...pretty smooth install, but can't get sound working. (Worked fine before, and still works under WinXP dual-boot)

It correctly recognizes my sound card as:
Vendor: Creative Labs
Model: SB Audigy
Module: audigy

But "Play test sound" doesn't do anything, neither does Grip or XMMS.
It will act like its playing a CD (switch tracks, etc.), but no sound.

I turned on "enable sound server startup" in Sound Preferences.

Maybe it has to do with ALSA module? I didn't install that with RH...

Here is (what I think is) all relevant output. I included stuff about cdrom drives too, because of what it says at the end of dmesg. I just had a regular music CD in the drive.

Any help would be much appreciated :)

jessica

is it on "mute"? lmao.

mishu_b 03-01-2004 01:26 AM

you have R.H. 9.0 now?

nbitaud 03-01-2004 02:58 AM

I think the same as drkfir5: alsa driver are always "mute" by default. Try alsamixer

NB

Make sure you have the mp3 plugin as well..it does not come with RH

Hope that helps...

heh, my bad

I don't have alsamixer, but turning up the volume in aumix did the trick.

Thanks everybody! You all win the prize.

And now if only I could get X to use more than 256 colors....Ah well, I'll fiddle a bit more before posting a new thread.
