no screens found error - xserver disabled

Hey,
I'm new to lynux - using ubuntu dapper for few weeks now. I restarted my computer yesterday after installing updates: it stopped restart in the middle, saying:
failed to start the X server. it is likely that it is not set up correctly.

the X server output diagnose is:
Fatal server error:
no screens found

I tried the : sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
(with the correct spelling of course) but it did not work, still get the no screens found error.

I 'm new to this, so first i would appreciate any advice on what to do before I "give up" and reinstall,
but also directions on how to do what ever you advice me.
thanks
yotam

Hi, maybe there is an usable backup of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf
If not take a look at your screen section in the currently used xorg.conf
In the most cases it should look like this..
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Videocard0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 16
Modes "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
EndSection

The device that is used there must fit to the one that is listed in the device section. There is also an other POST in this forum and it seams thats similar to your problem.
Maybe # sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-core=1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10
Will solve your problem as well
