no recog. dual monitors SUSE 9.1
 

I have a laptop running SUSE 9.1, i just switched from XP, and last year i had Red Hat 9 but i didn't have a second monitor. i was wondering how i can configure a second monitor besides my native lcd. it's a KDS ultra flat 19". even though i ran red hat, i'm still a noobie, so try to keep the language fairly simple. need more details? let me know! thanks a bunch

i would say the first problem would be that the laptop doesn;t support dual monitors, i haven;t of a laptop supporting dual monitors, i wouldn;t see why, laptops are mainly used to go places with, so why would u carry a extra monitor along, i could be wrong, but i would bet its because of the VC not supporting it.

Of course some laptops support dual monitors. My Samsung Q20 for example. There was a discussion a few weeks back about tweaking one of the config files manually. Mandrake has a GUI for it I believe.

i know shit about mandrake, im mainly suse, and red hat, guess im behind the time with laptops i wasn;t aware they came with a dual monitor function

Shelf_life20 - I'll give you a perfect reason why a laptop should support dual monitors. I work part time as an instructor at the local college. Until I put Linux on my Dell Inspiron 8200, I was using my laptop to give presentations. The dual monitor support worked perfectly for this. I could have the actual presentation on the projector, while the editor for PowerPoint was on my laptop display. I could make corrections on the fly without interrupting my presentation.

This was really nice if I wanted to prevent my students from seeing certain aspects of my desktop - such as my IM window. It wouldn't do to have my wife interrupt a presentation with an IM question about something or comment about my kids or something while I'm trying to teach. The dual-monitor support kept that confidential.

Why am I getting IM messages while I'm teaching? I hook up my laptop to the college's computer lab, which has Internet access. My IM is running all the time, so it happens.

Anyway, I'm in the same boat as Curl. I'm using SUSE 9.1 Pro and would like to configure it for dual monitor support. My guess is that the nVidia driver doesn't support it, but I could be wrong.

no actually its not the nvidia driver, cause i figured out the problem, i was curious if it was just the dvi out, and to see if it was just the monitor, its not the div its the monitor i gues the monitor is so old that its not supported or something cause it doesn;t work on just ingle monoitr either, and doesn;t work on either ports, but my 17" monitor works great on both dvi and vga, and i dont have any newer monitors to test it, so i guess im SOL for the time being.
