The harddisk has old window 98 image. I need to make it boot up copy some improtant file before I can install my linux. (turn my window 98 into linux box)

I use another working monitor which tested on another computer.
I plug it in still no image.

Appreciate anyone can help.

your computer has to beep once a few second after you turn it on it is call post test. I think it looks to see if your ram and cpu are present and working. So the cpu is installed but what about random access memory (ram) it needs to be present and working also. You also need to hear the whine of the hard drive spinning up to speed. I cant remeber what two beeps represent but is an error with memory or something.

Hope this helps I am just a hobbiest
so no real proffesional. Just food for thought

Okay so this is with windows ? No Linux yet.

Did you try booting with a Win 98 Boot disk? Does this work, if this works I would try accessing the hdd. See if you can read the hdd. If so then I would run fdisk MBR and see if this helps.

If nothing then open the case and pull out then re-install all PCI cards plus the RAM see if this works, if not then take out the modem pci card see what happens and then the sound card and so forth trying to reboot in between and see if the CPU boots up.

If none of this works you may have a short in your MBO, then try and take the hdd and install as a slave in a working PC and pull the data off.
