There is not a listing for the n50 under the HCL but there are two on the N70. Those might help out. So click on the HCL link above and look under cameras/nikon.

You can also configure it as a "usb mass storage" device.

I have an IBM R50e laptop with ubuntu(6.06)Gnome, dapper and gThumb image program.
I connect my Nikon D50 to the laptop using the USB cable which came with the camera.
After a short time a "usbdisk" ikon appears on the desktop, which I can double-click on and access the camera's memory card, both read and write.
Also a window appears with heading "photo import" and says a photcard has been detected and has a button to "Import Photos", which I can click to import the photos ( but I don't, as I prefer to just copy them to where I want them).
I previously had ubuntu 5.10 breezy which also did the same.

On my desktop I have SUSE 9.1. When I plug in the camera/USB cable I can go to /media/usbname and everything hangs up. But if I put the memory card from the camera into a USB card reader, I can the access the card photos and do anything I want.

I think I paid about 10 UK pounds for the card reader, and ubuntu comes free. So my prefered advice is to try ubuntu, perhaps with a live CD/DVD, and if that doesn't work, think about buying a card reader.

I hope this will help, if you haven't already solved it.
