NIC not working in kernel 2.6.4

my NIC's not working in kernel 2.6.4...
dmesg shows
Code:
NET: Registered protocol family 2
IP: routing cache hash table of 4096 buckets, 32Kbytes
TCP: Has tables configured (established 32768 bind 65336)
IPv4 over IPv4 tunneling driver
divert: not allocating divert_blk for non-ethernet device tunl0
GRE over IPv4 tunneling drive
divert: not allocating divert_blk for non-ehternet device gre0
lspci shows
Code:
00:10.0 Ethernet controller: Macronix, Inc. [MIXC] MX987x5 (rev 25)
but ifconfig shows nothing about my NIC which is supposed to be eth0.
I am not too sure that I have compiled tulip driver for the NIC coz there wasn't anything about tulip in my /lib/modules/2.6.4/drivers/net but there's a directory in my /lib/modules/2.4/drivers/net called tulip and a file named tulip.o is inside, in which I believe is the driver.

I reckon if I didn't compile the driver for my NIC in the first place, lspci shouldn't appear with the correct model of my NIC so I think the problem is not here..

Any clue?
??

It shows the card and name because it's still connected to the PCI bus, and the firmware tells the kernel what it is. When compiling the new kernel, just make sure to add something that sounds remotely like it. If all else fails, put everything in there under the class that it is(10-100mbit, 100mbit, 1000mbit) as a module and see. lol

Is there any way to compile kernel modules, i mean just modules so i can save a bit of time?
I reckon choosing all the NET drivers as modules in menuconfig, make modules, make modules_install?
cheers,
F

I have recompiled the kernel and made sure that the Networking Drivers for 10 / 100 / 1000 Mbits LAN Card are chosen but I still can't bring up the NIC card....
It worked fine with kernel 2.4 when the module tulip is loaded. but the 2.6 binary didn't compile anything in
/lib/modules/2.6.4/kernel/net/drivers

Any help please?
