Nic detection order

All,
Suppose you install your favorite flavor of Linux, and it correctly identifies 2 network cards on your system. Assuming they are the exact same make and model, is there any way to tell which detected card corresponds to which physical card during the install process?

Thanks,
-P

Typically, the scan order starts at the first PCI slot i.e. the one closest to the video card slot and it will be assigned eth0. The integrated NIC is the last one scanned.

I can not confirm this for all mother boards.

Normally on most motherboards 1st pci slot is closes to the keyboard ports and work there way farther out. If looking at back it would be left to right. Or on a tower bottom to top.

Another way to tell is know the mac address printed on each card and run the command ' /sbin/ifconfig -a ' to see HWADDR on all nic.

Hope this helps.
