NForce 2 hd controller with WD 60gb. Prob in Win; Linux?

A while ago when I installed the nforce 2 drivers in XP for my Shuttle AN35N-Ultra mobo, I couldn't boot up into XP. Aparently the MCP seemed to be giving me errors or something. I eventually had to reformat. I've got the nforce-2 drivers from Nvidia for my Linux box. Will I have the same problem?

I read that WD hard drives have issues with some nforce 2 mobos, but that most were fixed by moving the jumper settings on the drive.

I'm really not sure what to do right now. I'd like the linux drivers, as [or so I have read] the hard disk optimization thing makes it read much faster., but I don't want to have to reformat. If I install them for linux, and I get an error, could I go through an interactive startup and not load the drivers? Or will it integrate into the kernel directly? A boot disk has the actual kernel on it so I could make one now, install the drivers, and then if it doesn't work, just use the floppy kernel until I can sort things out?

THanks a lot
