new monitor

My monitor just died on my linux box, so I went and got another one. However, when i boot linux the monitor goes blank when x windows starts. How do i configure my computer so that this monitor will work?

If you have RedHat, Mandrake too I think, there is a cute little utility known as XConfigurator. Its easy, I don't trust it. You'll have to be root to use it, or the other two possibilities:

cd /usr/X11/bin
./XFree86 -configure

Then it will tell you how to test it. Do that and if X displays correctly, copy the file to /etc/X11/ and rename it XF86Config.

Alternatively, you can use the utility xf86config, also in /usr/X11/bin, but make sure you know the vert and horiz sync of your new monitor, and the memory onboard your video card, as well as the model and vendor of the card too.

Luck,
