New LINUX User Here Needing Modem, Printer and Scanner Help
Hey every one,
I just installed SuSE LINUX 9 from there FTP server and every thing works except my modem, printer and scanner. I have it setup as a dual boot next to Windows XP Pro. I went into YaST and clicked on "Hardware information" and I saved the log file as hardware.txt. I can't even understand half the crap in this file so I'll try to shorten it as much as possible. Keep in mind that I'm completely new to LINUX. The one hardware I'm most concerned in getting to work is my modem.
Now here's part of the log file what LINUX detected as my hardware...
============ start debug info ============
libhd version 7.30 (ia32)
kernel version is 2.4
Here is where I cut off alot of crap....
=========== end debug info ============
Even more crap I cut off...
This is my modem which I can't get to work, it's on COM3 on windows. When testing it on Linux I know I picked the right port but when the software tried to communicate with the modem it says the modem isn't responding.

This is my video card, I don't need help with this one I learned that I can goto the nVidia web site and download a new Linux driver to get the 3d support to work or so I was told to when I isntalled SuSE.

For some reason it didn't even detect my printer, but any way all the info on my printer is as the very top.
Any help any one can give me would be greatly appreciated.

your modem didnt work as its a winmodem u have to download its linux drivers but the things is u have to pay for the coexant linux driver but there was a post here on this site that someone is giving it for free , search for it
the scanner is unsupported by any distro, sorry. the printer is working 100% under linux, have you configured the printer yet, through >yast>hardware>printer? the same holds for the modem, have you configured it with >yast>network devices>modem yet? judging by the 'conextant' name in the hardware info, its a good bet that it's a winmodem. if yast can't configure it, it's a lost cause.
After spending about 6 hours on YAST until 4:30 in the morning I pretty much learned how to use it and I've tried every thing I could to get it to work. I usually don't ask for help until after trying a good whole day trying to figure it out my self. But yeah it is a WinModem, but I figured it would work considering that I read off the SuSE site that 9.0 supports some WinModem's. I can always switch out my dads modem it says Generic 56k in his windows setup, besides he only uses windows so any 56k should be good I'll just trade him mine. But now for the scanner I guess I'll be stuck switching to windows when I need to scan something. And for the printer I tired what you said bye useing YAST and nothing I do seems to work but I'll try again.
I finely got the Printer to work. I went into my BIOS setup into the I/O settings and under the parallel port setting I took it off of Auto and put it on Manual and did the manual settings for the port, so it wasn't the printer it was LINUX not being able to detect my parallel port. Right now I switched modems with my dad I gave him mine and I took his. In windows it's labeled as "Generic 56K HCF Data/Fax Modem". I haven't gotten it to work yet, but like usual it's probably something so simple. I wish YAST would let me do a manual setup of the modem.
i don't want to be the fly in your soup but as far as i know Generic 56K HCF Data/Fax Modems is winmodems too - they feature the same Conexant chipset - if u read ur first post u'll see whot i mean and besides i had those modems too - lol -
I know that now. I spent a whole day and night researching how modems work and I found out that the majority of PCI modems aren't worth spit. Because they rely on software and mother board resources to work mostly the CPU and a lot of drivers that are binary and mostly made for windows. And they're not even real modems. I'm done with software modems my next modem I buy is going to be an external serial modem preferably US Robotics. I want a real modem that has it's own hard ware and doesn't matter what OS you run.
But I rather have it fail on the first try and learn all I did on modems than have it work and not learn any thing at all.
Like the phrase goes, you learn better from your failures than you do your successes.
I would if I could, but I don't know where to get it. There's only one site I've seen it at and they want you to pay or it. And when I pay for drivers that should be free is the day pigs fly. If I end up spending any thing on any thing it's going to be a new modem. Plus I found a external serial modem on mysimon.com for $30 something plus free shipping.
the kernel of my mandrake 10 distro is 263-7, which i understand is the stable version of the kernel. but the only hcf conexent modem drivers on the site discussed above are not for this kernel. i would be willing to buy one but they are only for kernels 9 and 13. does that mean i have to update my kernel? I'm not up to that just yet. i tried installing the driver for
i bot a serial modem to use with linux but it crashed my windows installation. i have to have that just yet to do really serious stuff. i really just want to use my pci modem. if not that, then my linux distro will remain mute.
I used www.mysimon.com and found a $30 something external serial modem. And I have to say it's pretty damn nice. The new modem doesn't take up my motherboard resources and I get more stable connections and faster dialup speeds. Best part is it's not depended on software to work so I can plug it into any computer with any os. My new philosophy is, any hardware that depends on drivers (especially windows) to work isn't worth my money.
