new kernel - no printer

Having recently compiled kernel version 2.6.8.1 I find my printer isn't working.

It's an HP 5740 using a usb connection. It worked fine with the old kernel.

Cups is saying "Printer not connected; will retry in 30 seconds...". The system recognizes the usb printer at bootup and when I disconnect and reconnect it.

The currently installed modules are:

ac97_bus
ata_generic
btcx_risc
bttv
ehci_hcd
firmware_class
i2c_algo_bit
i2c_core
ieee1394
ir_common
ohci_hcd
sbp2
snd
snd_ac97_codec
snd_ens1371
snd_mixer_oss
snd_page_alloc
snd_pcm
snd_pcm_oss
snd_rawmidi
snd_timer
tvaudio
tveeprom
uhci_hcd
usbcore
usblp
usbserial
video_buf

Printing seems like it should work but it just doesn't. I'm wondering there is anything obvious here I might be missing.

I myself had issues with kernel 2.6.8 in the USB with the uhci-hcd module. I would try something a lot newer like 2.6.22 or so.
