New kernel doesn't recognize my modem's UART

Hi everybody

when I was using Red Hat 8, my modem worked, but it was really slow (1/5 of the speed under windows).

I changed for Slackware, and this time, it doesn't work anymore : each time i try to use "setserial" to put the correct IRQ, I get a "ttyS2: LSR safety check engaged" error. And, of course, chat and pppd won't work either (same error message).

I changed my BIOS to "enable software PnP", and since, ttyS2 is no more mentioned at boot time.

I tried "setserial" with "autoconfig" parameter : I got a UART "unknown". If I try with "skip_test" option, it remains "unknown", but no more "LSR error" is issued.

My guess is that, as mentioned in the HOW-TO or man page, I may have a cheap UART electronic. But my kernel is 2.4, like Red Hat 8.

Does anyone know more about it ?
