Hi all here is my problem I just install Ubuntu 12.10 on my PC as a duel boot with windows 7. The problem comes after I log in all I see is the wallpaper so I tried to open terminal and it opened. Next I tried to reset the unity/compiz with this code.
sudo apt-get install dconf-tools
dconf reset -f /org/compiz/
setsid unity
What came up was all this.
Compiz (core) -Info: Loading plugin: core
Compiz (core) - info: starting plugin: core
Unity-panel - service: no process found
compizconfig - info: Backend :gsettings
compizconfig - info: intergration : true
compiz (core)- info: profile :unity
compiz(core) - info: loading plugin: composite
compiz(core) - info: starting plugin: composite
compiz(core) - info: loading plugin: opengl
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display "0.0"
compiz (core) - info: Unity is not supported by your hardware. Enabling software rendering instead (slow)
After this it goes on for pages of warnings here they are(they repeat a lot)
compiz (decor) - warn: requested a pixmap type decoration when compositing isn't available
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display "0.0"
compiz (openl) - Fatal: glxQueryExtensionsString is null for Screen0
My hardware is
motherboard BIOSTAR N68S3B
Graphics Nvidia Geforce 7025
Processor is AMD Athlon llx4 630 2.8GHZ socket AM3
I am running 8GB of Corsair XMS3 ram.
I hope this is enough information because I can not copy and paste in Ubuntu all I have is terminal and I bring it up by using Ctrl + Alt +_T. I have tried to use Ubuntu 2 years ago on the same machine and could not get it running and nobody had answers for me, maybe this time some can find out what is wrong. I do run Windows 7 with no problems but would like to switch to Ubuntu.
Are you sure you have the best nvidia display driver installed? You can check at System Settings/Additional Drivers. Systems Settings is accessible from the cog icon on the upper right (at least, on my machine -- or is your desktop not showing the cog?). I had to do this when I upgraded to a new Ubuntu version before Unity would start working.
One other thought: at the log in screen, you may have a choice between Unity and Unity 2D. If you do have this choice, you might try one or the other to see if you get a usable desktop.
Hi,
I can not get into system settings form the cog because I have nothing on my screen all there is that shows is the wallpaper. I have tried to install new drivers through terminal using the commands below.
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current-updates
sudo apt-get install nvidia-experimental-304
this crashes when I get to the last command.
As for the log in screen I did not see those options.
I have tried to purge unity from the system, then install the gnome 3 desk top which just crashed the system so I can not get into any thing any more. So I deleted the Ubuntu partition and installed Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit which turned may desk top into a brick. I am in the process of re installing the image I made before doing all this. Over the years that I have played with Linux in virtual machines and have gotten to like Linux but I have yet had luck getting it on a machine which has changed my opinion of Linux so that I rate it worst the Windows. This answer comes from many hours searching the web for answers to fix the original problem which ended turning my pc into a brick. If any body has any answers I will watch this post for a little while longer.
which, according to the man pages, "allows the user to reset profile parameters in compiz and restart the Unity shell with default settings."
I used this once when all of my icons disappeared from the desktop. I am not sure it actually helped me, but it did reset all desktop options to the defaults, which are at least minimally operational. Then I had to reconstruct the various desktop settings that I had previously.
I did do that before trying to update the drivers and it just crashed. I think it is the graphics drivers but do not know how to update the drivers differently from this below. I would really like to get this problem solved if possible. Once I repair my machine I would like to re install Ubuntu 12.10 but but right now it is the worst system out there.
Hi,
I do thank you for all your help I just wish there was an answer I have gone to different forums and have a lot of things that ended in turning my PC into a brick which I did re image. I just downloaded Ubuntu 12.04.2 amd64 in hopes that it might work. I will post again in about 1 hour to let you know how it went. Do you know of another way to change the graphics in terminal then what I listed above. If you do please let me know. As far as the site you listed I did not know about it I have marked it as a favorite, again thank you for your help.
I think I have found the problem but don't know how to fix. As I said above I was downloading Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS amd64 I burned the ISO to disc and when I started the disc to try Ubuntu it came up with this message
[COLOR="DarkOliveGreen"]microcode: failed to load file amd.ucode/microcode_amd.bin
How do I put this into the disc so when I install Ubuntu it will work.
P.S.
Just for kicks I kept going with the disc to try Ubuntu to see what would happen and every thing I described above happened again. Now you might say how come I did not see this before. The 12.10 disc booted up just fine. Oh by the way if the file is missing is there a way I can slip stream it into the disc or iso file to have it in there.
Thank You
I do not know what your error message means or what to do about it.
I have successfully burned CDs and DVDs using brasero to make a bootable OS disk, but only from the Nautilus GUI. I have not done it from the command line, but there is a man page on brasero. Once, I tried just using cp to copy an iso image to a CD. cp did copy the file, but the disk did not work at all -- it failed to produce a bootable disk.
In my search I have found that this is very common to happen in Linux using AMD processors but the links they post go no where.
This is happening in Mint, Ubuntu, XMBC, Arch, and so on. I am trying to get to support on amd's site but no luck right now.
here is one site that I found but the link does not work.
