The install problem is documented, I believe here. However, I still have no satisfaction. As long as the consensus is that the computer is not defective, I'll just get a usb card reader.

Michael Piziak,

I strongly recommend a SanDisk ImageMate 12 in 1 card reader:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from...er+usb&_sop=15

They are cheap, reliable and work perfectly.

By the way, I like your photos.

That is the RTS522A card reader and it IS supported in Linux. See here:https://cateee.net/lkddb/web-lkddb/MFD_RTSX_PCI.html All you need is a 4.4+ kernel. If someone else here knows more about Ubuntu and can help you with getting that, then that would be excellent.

Also, check out https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...d/+bug/1277608 and https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...478/comments/6

It is not recommended to install libnss-myhostname.

I patiently await for someone to tell me exactly what to do.

Wily doesn't have a new enough kernel. So you can:
A. Get someone to help you upgrade the kernel.
B. Wait for 16.04 to be released, which should have 4.4.
C. Buy a new card reader and then use that until yours is supported in Ubuntu.

Michael Piziak,

Minimal aggro with that cheap SanDisk multicard reader.

If you only need one for SD cards, this Fuji one is even cheaper:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fujifilm-Car...sd+card+reader

A local shop probably stocks something similar.

Thanks and, and I'm going to take this advice, and those are the 3 steps I'll take.

you forgot option C

Find another Linux Distro that already has/uses a 4.4.x Kernel mine does, and I am sure their are plenty more out there that do, and save a few bucks. Why wait on Ubuntuttu to get up with the times? Stop letting the 'MAN' hold you back.

That'll work too. The upgrade to Ubuntu shouldn't be too hard, I just have 0 experience with Ubuntu, so I can't be of help on upgrading a kernel.

Looking at Distrowatch, unless you go to a rolling release, the only distro is ExTix and I'm not super impressed with them. I would say if you're going to a distro that contains support, it would have to be a rolling release, unless you can find one that supports updating to 4.4.

I tried to upgrade to Ubuntu 15.x but each time I tried it locked up the system.
It won't be long until 16.04 lts comes out, so no big deal. I'll use a card reader until then.

michael piziak, your hardware is fine!

i found one thread that seems to address your exact problem:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/7310...n-ubuntu-15-10
notice this:
Quote:
FIXED: I installed the latest stable kernel 4.4.1 using deb packages, and now the SD Card Reader is working, and lspci -nnk returns the following:

06:00.0 Unassigned class [ff00]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device [10ec:522a] (rev 01)
Subsystem: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device [10ec:522a]
Kernel driver in use: rtsx_pci

I hope this helps someone with this new model Dell machine!
(please note that the lspci command is for informative purposes only, it will not "fix" anything)

btw, ubuntu is designed to be usable without the command line.
i'm sure you can use the software center.

edit:
i just noticed that the solution was for 15.10.
installing on 14.04 might prove more difficult.
anyhow, here are the ubuntu kernels: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
if you look closely, no 4.x.x kernel is available for 14.04.
so the options are:
- install it anyway and hope for the best
- compile your own kernel (not recommended)
- change to 15.10 (re-install!)
- wait for 16.04 and re-install

whatever you so, remember to
Code:
sudo update-grub
afterwards.
if it doesn't work, you can always go into your grub menu (hold shift during bootup) and boot into the old kernel again.
don't panic!

A very good idea, in my opinion.

Just an update.

I put Windows 10 back on just to make sure it's not the hardware of the computer, and the card reader works with Windows 10. The computer is fine.

Another update: My mother just got a brand new AMD HP notebook that looks like mine (mine is Intel Core i3). Her computer will bring the cards right up when the same Ubuntu 14.04 lts is on her system.

an FYI: I had put the latest version of Mint on my system, and the card reader wouldn't work under it either.

Anyways, I'm back to using Ubuntu 14.04 lts - had to get that dirty MS Windows 10 off my computer, LOL
