New HD: can log into windows but not linux (slackware)

Hey,
I installed a new HD yesterday and everything was fine, however by now I can't acces my slackware 13.37 32-bit (lilo bootloader), nor gparted live or the slackware disk.
Yesterday it looked like this in the bios:
IDE channel 0 master: [old hd]
IDE channel 0 slave: [none]
IDE channel 1 master: [DVD]
...
(new hd didn't show anywhere)
today I realised I'd have to look into the master/slave settings and jumper so I changed a bit.

IDE channel 0 master: [old hd]
IDE channel 0 slave: [none]
IDE channel 1 master: [new hd]
...
(DVD didn't show, probably due to conflict over chan1 master)

at this point I could log into windows and linux just fine.
To avoid conflict I changed the cables so it looked like this:
IDE channel 0 master: [old hd]
IDE channel 0 slave: [none]
IDE channel 1 master: [new hd]
...
IDE channel 4 master: [DVD]

NOTE: At no point did I touch the original hd, its cables or configuration!

But since I did this I can no longer log into linux, gparted live cd, or slackware cd. The only thing I did was move the DVD cables (admittedly I played a bit with the jumper of the dvd, trying to move it unsuccesfully).

---
Slackware CD, right after pressing enter when it asks for boot options:
Loading initrd.img.... isolinux: Disk error 80,AX=4236, drive 9F

Slackware parition says: Kernel panic - not syncing VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown - block (8,4)
and
Swapper not tainted 2.6.37.6 - smp#2
---

If it helps I can gather more details on the error logs. I'm just a bit puzzled of what's going on. If it's the old hd, or its position, somewhat affected by my mounting, I shouldn't be able to get into windows either if I can't get into linux. And why are the DVDs not playing properly? Maybe its the part when they try to access my HDs.

Also, the new HD doesn't show up in windows (though in the bios). I'll try getting a non-live partition program to see if I can see it there.

Yep, the new HD shows in partition managers on windows.
Anyone have any suggestions of what's going on?

Some tests showed the dvd drive is faulty. That still doesn't explain why slackware gives me kernel errors, though. Anyway, I ordered a new drive and will try a ubuntu live usb later, after I found and cleaned something to do back-up (god I hate ubuntu).
