OK, this isn't funny anymore. I wiped the disks at work, like a dream on Windows, and then tried to burn the .iso image that DeVeDe created yesterday. Both K3d and Nero Linux (that I downloaded in another fruitless attempt to wipe the disk) failed to write onto the DVD. Here are the logs from the two programmes:
