new cable modem does not work now...
 

Hi, I got a new cable modem. Also a router with 2 computers connected. Now the internet on one of the computers does not work. It was working fine, all i did was switch cable modems and now it doesn't work. The router recognizes it and the ethernet card for it seems to be working. This is for windows and linux. Not sure what to do because I tried the drivers and everything seems to be connected properly.

I tried it with knoppix too and it still doesn't work.

Are you sure that you registered the cable modem's MAC address with your isp? Furthermore, are your computers pulling DHCP from the router or are they configured with static IP's?

Make sure the modem is plugged into the port marked wan on the router. Open a terminal and type the command su hit enter and then type your root password hit enter then type ifconfig and copy and paste the text here

Sorry I am not too experienced with routers and all that ip address stuff.

When I plug the cable modem to the WAN it stops working. i tried the reset and it still didn't help. It's in another port right now, like uplink or something.

You can connect with windows but not with linux? Try releasing the ip in windows and shutting windows off or unplug it from the router then open a terminal and switch user to root (su) and run dhcpcd -s and see if that works

I suspect that by not using the wan port your router is acting like a hub giving each computer a direct connection to the net in which case your isp might only allow you one ip address at a time.

Thanks jarib and dretay. You were right about the one ip at a time, so I plugged it into lan and everything works fine now :)
