Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Networking with serial cable?

Okay, I'm actually Tux-O-Matic, but right now I'm locked out of my account , so I'm known as Man in the Redhat .

Anyway, I found instructions on networking with a serial cable for Windows, but none for Linux. Does anyone know a site that lists that, or does anyone possibly know how to? If you think it's self explanatory or just like Windows, then you don't have to respond .

Also I'm wondering about phone lines. Is it possible to network with a phone line? Again, you don't have to respond if you think it's self explanatory.

AFAIK you want to set up one box as the "server" and connect the "client(s)" to it.
A line like (for Debian) "T0:23:respawn:/sbin/getty -L ttyS0 115200 vt100" in /etc/inittab will set up the "server" to check for logins. You would use something like "minicom" in Linux or "Hyper Terminal" or "PuTTY" in Windows to connect.

Yes. Slightly different inittab settings, same connection programs.

You can do PPP over a serial cable ... or via modems.
PPP can transport many different protocols including TCP/IP.
