network interface probelm
hello
I have a very old notebook (486dx4 8 M Ram, 400 Mb HDD), with an i82365 pcmcia chipset and a dlink dfe-650TX network card. I have debian 2 (with kernel 2.0.34) installed. My problem is, that I can't get the interface up. The card works, I tried in an other notebook. The pcmcia slot should work too... I insmodded pcmcia_core, i82365, pcnet_cs (heard, this one's for my pcmcia card) 8390 (came automatically with the pcnet_cs module) No problems so far (insmod doesn't complain at all). I also have an entry in the /etc/modutils/conf.generic file which says: alias eth0 8390 (also tried alias eth0 pcnet_cs, same result) this should do the trick, shouldn't it? Well, it doesn't. When I type at the console infconfig eth0 up, i get eth0: unknown interface. So, what did I forget? Thanks for everything. raven PS: no, i won't fuzz away with installing ANYTHING from floppies again, so I have to get this card up an' running with default tools (no gcc), that came on one of the 5 (!!!) floppies of debian. |
2.0 kernel? I would think you would have a better chance with a more up-to-date one/two floppy based mini-distro (yes, I read the ps, but what's the alternative?). Must be something around with good networking tools.
Sorry I don't have a specific recommendation, but I would think all the improvements and refinements that have gone into the kernel/drivers since v2.0 would be worth a lot. |
Hello
You're right, kernel 2.6 is nice, but 30 megs if i didn't miss anything (thats a few floppies, I simply don't have). But it's ok now, i resolved the problem, the pcmcia service crashed, and I had no entry for my network card in /etc/pcmcia/config. I inserted one, talked to the pcmcia daemon, asked him to please run, and now it's working. Thanks anyway. raven |
