Network Card problems.

Hi all.

Just about to get my network started and I can't configure the network cards correctly for some reason. Both my machines are running Mandrake 9.2

Uname - r gives me 2.4.22-10mdk
lspci gives me on both machines
00:0c.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10) One machine is a desktop with a PCI network card. The second is my laptop with a PCMCIA network card.

I checked on the mandrake compatability list and it says it should be OK.

I'm not sure the PCMCIA car is working correctly.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
DBG.

Look at the output of lsmod to see if the 8139too module is loading i.e.
/sbin/lsmod

Or howabout
/sbin/ifconfig

What is the configuration of your network? How are the PC's connected to the network Are you using DHCP or a static IP address?

Thanks for the reply.

There are just 2 pcs. My laptop and my main hunk of junk. connected by a patch cable.

The adresses I've assigend to the PC's are 192.168.0.1 for the main machine and 192.168.0.2 for the laptop. Not sure how sucessful this has been as I used the mandrake wizards to do it.

/sbin/lsmod oshows on the laptop that the 8139too is size 17384 and used by 1.
on the main same size but used by 0.

/sbin/ifconfig:-

Laptop
[hywel@localhost hywel]$ /sbin/ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:FC:B9:3F:C0

Main machine:-

UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:1196 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:1196 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:78929 (77.0 Kb) TX bytes:78929 (77.0 Kb)

collisions:0 txqueuelen:3
RX bytes:126916 (123.9 Kb) TX bytes:28822 (28.1 Kb)

Judging by this is it correct to assume that the laptop is OK but the main isn't?

The laptop shows eth0 but it is not assigned an IP address.
Try as root
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up

Your main PC does not show a eth0.
How do you connect to the internet?
Is is the nic module loading?
Look at the output of dmesg to see if there are any error messages relating to the NIC.

If you are just using a patch cable i.e. no hub / switch / router between the two is it a crossover cable?

I've now got them sucessfulliy pinging each other!
It seems that most of the problem was due to the fact that I hadn't configured the firewall correctly. (Guarddog). I created a LAN zone and since I've beeen able to ping and nmap successfully.

Unfortuanately I'm having trouble getting the laptop which needs to connect to the net via my main box on the LAN. I've configured Mozilla on the lappy to connect via a proxy using the address of the main machine. When I type www.mysite.com adress on the laptop it tells me:-

"The connection was refused when attempting to contact the proxy server you have configured. Please check your settings and try again"

Any ideas?
I'd like to get file sharing between the 2 sorted as well. Any hints as to how to start?
