need recommendations for external hard drive to backup dual boot (Win XP + ubuntu)
I need recommendations for an external hard drive to backup a dual boot (Win Vista/XP + ubuntu) laptop, and also another Win7 desktop.
I want to spend approx $100. I looked at Western Digital and Seagate, but do not know enough to decide whether they can be used to backup a dual boot system. (http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/ca...equestid=13582)
Your suggestions appreciated.
Every HD can be used to backup your data.
Just create 2 partitions, one for windows and one for linux, and backup your drives.
Kind regards
Thanks for replying.
What software should I use to partition it? (I read in a few reviews that the software that comes with both WD and Seagate hard drives is for Windows backup - not sure if they can create partitions).
Take a look at http://gparted.sourceforge.net/
Make sure the first partition is the windows partition, since it seems windows doesn't recognize
the second partition, if the first is linux.
I've used my 4 year old WD external drive to backup Linux & Windows. I use Win NTFS format, since Win can't see Linux ext formats. Just be sure linux have read/write access to the drive is you decide to try it.

Alright from your posts, I shall create the following 3 partitions using Gparted: Win7 (for desktop backup), WinVista (for laptop Win partition), Linux(for laptop Ubuntu partition). From Fred's post, I should use Win NTFS format.
Thanks!
